Twoof BMTWBM’s urbanwater projects havebeen
successful at winning recent HealthyWaterways
Awards. BrisbaneCityCouncil’sBrisbaneCityCreek
FiltrationProject, won theUrbanRenewal Award. The
project involves three creek filtration systems inFerny
Grove, HollandPark andGreenslopes to filter
stormwater before it is discharged to sensitive
receiving environments.
Project benefits include improvedwater quality,
decreased stormwater runoff and enhanced social
amenity and ecological values.
Meanwhile, LoganCityCouncil’sSlacksCreek
Catchment RecoveryProject won theGovernment
Award. This project was initiatedby LoganCity
Council to “activate, beautify and clean” thewaterway
for long-term community and environmental benefits.
Theproject included community treeplantings,
clean-up activities, art installations and environmental
enhancement.
BMTWBM contributes to “Natural
Historyof SpencerGulf”
(chapter 29 “SpencerGulf and climate change”written
byDaniel A. Botelho,Michael E. Barry and JamesB.
Brook).
‘SpencerGulf is aunique ecosystem, an inverse estuary
on a temperate coast of an arid, ancient andweathered
continent’ (Professor AnthonyCheshire, June2014).
Basedonour extensive experience and knowledgeof
SpencerGulf, BMTWBM staff, Dr Daniel Botelho andDr
Michael Barry, have authored a chapter of this new
publication, focussingonSpencerGulf and climate
change. Other chapters discuss theGulf’s history;
physical characteristics; whales, dolphins and seals;
seabirds; reef fishes; giant Australian cuttlefish;
recreational and commercial fishing;marinepollution;
management andprotection; and fishpopulation
studies.
